A Funny Thing Happened on My Way to Moscow

At Book Club today, we reviewed last month's book, Twilight, by Stephanie Meyer, and it reminded me of what happened last week. She's actually written three books, with Twilight being the first in the series. I had already finished the first two, and had the third in my bag to read on the plane up to Moscow to see Jake and Lindsay and baby Reese.

I have to say they're not my most favorite books, but they are interesting in an odd sort of way--they're about vampires and werewolves, not my usual genre. Stephanie Meyer is a good writer and storyteller, though, and I like her choice of words and her descriptions.

Here's the story...
Kirt had just dropped me off at the airport to catch my flight to Moscow. Security lines were very short, so I was there in plenty of time. I pulled out the third book, Eclipse, and started to read. A short time later, my cell phone rang.
"Lorrie Naylor?"
"Yes?"
"This is Alaska Airlines--where are you?"
"I'm in the waiting room, waiting for my flight to be called."
"We've called your flight--didn't you hear us? (Apparently not.) Everyone's boarded but you."
"Uh--okay--sorry--I'm coming!" By this time, I was on my feet, stuffing my book in my bag. I turned to look at the check in counter, they must have recognized my franic look, because they waved at me. I waved back, and made a run for it.
"Don't worry, you're okay. You don't have to run to the plane."
I walked very fast, nonethless.
Fortunately, I made the flight (it was early, even!)

Kirt has commented once or twice or maybe more, that when I'm reading, I don't listen really well, and he's right.

SKIING ON FOGGY BOTTOM

Yes, I know "Foggy Bottom" refers to an area in Washington, D.C. (check it out), but it was just a cool way to introduce you to our day on the slopes. After my jury trial last week (we won!) and Lorrie's week with Reese (and, I guess Jake and Lindsay, too), we took the day and went to Bogus to ski. Great snow!! Not so great weather conditions. The fog was so thick at times that it gave us both vertigo. We felt we were going downhill, when we were going up, or vice versa. I almost fell, and Lorrie did. It was hard to see where you were going. It made me want to see the Alfred Hitchcock thriller again. We still had fun, because we were together!

What do you think Reese is doing right now?

Well, it's Sunday night, EVERYONE at church has asked me how that new grandbaby is! What do you think Reese is doing right now? I think she's awake, smiling, and making the cute little noises only Reese can make, but she'll want to be cuddling up on someone's shoulder pretty soon for a little snooze before she REALLY goes to bed. Sleep well tonight, little Reese, and then maybe your mom and dad can, too!

Hello to Kirt...

But once in Boise, I was with my Kirt again, after 7 days of being away. (Mackenzie and Tyler, how did you do a whole summer of separation?) It's nice to know that after all these years, the magic is still there!

Goodbye to Reese...

I only cried 4 times. Once at Panda Express, once actually saying goodbye, once in the airport, once on the airplane...

But I get to see Reese again in 2 weeks!

And I brought home about 900 pictures of her!

NOW, YOU BETTER BE READY FOR THE BIG ONE!

Well, I have to admit that I was still in bed this morning around 7:20 am when I felt a tremor. I thought at first, "This is an earth quake!" But then I immediately dismissed that and thought it must be the garbage truck driving by. Then I realized it wasn't garbage day. It lasted, what seemed like a long time, but I still dismissed it since I'm sleep-deprived with my wife gone, and staying up late working on my jury trial. It wasn't until I got to court and the clerk asked if I felt the 6.0 earthquake this morning! It was in Northeastern Nevada. http://http//www.kutv.com/mostpopular/story.aspx?content_id=b0b77f3f-c341-4852-badf-990e421e7960

it's the little things...

I like little things, such as little tarts, little cups of cocoa, and tiny little hands and feet. If only I had a picture of the tiny feet! (If you can't tell, I'm still at Jake and Lindsay's, and this is little Reese's hand. It's the cutest!)

bad habits

Reese's pediatrician says that babies Reese's age can't form bad til they're about 6 months old. (Bad habits like being rocked to sleep and the like, I suppose.) Too late for me--I could do this every night!

What do you think Kirt is doing RIGHT NOW?

When our dog, Max, was still around, and we would leave him behind at Grandpa and Grandma's, (or worse yet, The Kennel), Malorie, Mackenzie, Jake, or I (rarely Kirt, though) would ask "What do you think Max is doing RIGHT NOW? The answers were always the same--sleeping, barking, howling (if he was at the kennel) or chasing a squirrel. Today I find myself thinking the same thing about Kirt.

What do you think Kirt is doing RIGHT NOW? Keep in mind I've been gone for 4 days already. Today, his office is closed, but he starts a trial tomorrow. Another good question--What do you think Kirt is eating today? I left a few things behind, and as Lindsay so aptly put it--he is almost 50, and should be able to take care of himself, and he can, but still, it's an interesting question.

Whenever you read this, please take a minute and comment on what you think Kirt is doing RIGHT NOW, or what he is eating today. We'll see who has the best answer!

Grandpa is missing out

Well, we have now set up webcams for all our kids. It is fun to video chat with everyone, but it is most fun to see Reese in live motion. WOW! She is cute. I'm missing my wife, but she seems to be doing a grand service (get it?) in dealing with blow outs and the like.

playing dress-up with Reese

after a rough night, (Lindsay didn't get to bed until 3) I got to put Reese in her Sunday best! Today, Reese wore the dress and sweater Aunt Carrie gave her, some cute white tights with a ruffled seat, the little booties Susanne Ricks crocheted for her, and a fun bow on her head! She's the cutest!
I love this picture--it looks like Reese is saying, "Let me tell you all about my morning!" She can't, so I will--it was a good morning! We made it to church, and she was very, very good for all three hours.

Being a grandma is great!

another day with Reese

I have to tell you this is just too much fun! I could write more, but a picture is worth a thousand words. I'm sure you'll be seeing more pictures of Reese and me---today we had a bath, and Reese fell asleep on my shoulder twice!

have you seen my abs?

If you have, tell them I'm looking for them! On Thursday, I went to a class at the gym called "Core Express". There was no teacher listed, and when I got there, it turned out to be a teacher I don't love so much. She calls everyone "girlfriend" and talks constantly! oh, well, that's beside the point--she did take us through a 30 minute abs only workout, and by Friday, I was feeling it. I am determined to find my abs again (I know they're in there somewhere!), so I am starting a 30 minute, every other day workout!

LORRIE IS HERSELF

And Kirt is too. We now have separate accounts, so you'll know who posted the blog.

Reese and Grandma

So here I am with Reese--and Jake and Lindsay! Reese is the cutest thing! The pictures do not do her justice! I've already changed a poopy diaper, and I must confess that I spent two hours simply holding her while she slept, just to watch the adorable expressions on her face! What the pictures don't show is her dimples, her adorable hands and feet, and her allover cuteness! Could I use any more exclamation marks???!!! I don't think so!

Leaving on a Jet Plane

I just dropped Lorrie off at the airport to spend the week with her granddaughter. I can't remember the last time we were separated for 7 nights! (No sympathy, I'm sure from Mackenzie, who sent her man off for months last summer.) She is excited to hold Reese and stay up all night with her (or watch her while Lindsay naps in the day). It will be lonely tonight.

Valentine Time!

Tonight we went to friends for dinner with friends. It was a friendly night. We have good friends. I was remembering that it was on February 8, 1981 when Lorrie said "yes" to my proposal the week earlier. Yes, I proposed in a lame way and at a lame place, but you have to admit I had the right question and desire. I couldn't understand why it would take her 7 days to say yes to the question she had been wanting me to ask for 11 years! But, I guess if she had waited that long, I could wait 600,300 seconds for her answer. Having been friends for so long; sharing the same birth date, tennis, seminary council, neighborhood, and so much more, it was so natural to be together forever. We didn't tell our parents until we came home for President's Holiday, and they were sure surprised. I remember the day we got married, it had rained a springtime downpour around noon. The rain stopped, and I carried my soon-t0-be bride over the flooding gutters on South Temple as we went to the the temple. The sun came out, and everything was so fresh and clean smelling. I am so grateful for Lorrie's patience, and the way she molded me (and continues to shape me) into a better man. 1 - 2 - 3.

Who is IN THIS blurry picture?

I'm getting grief from my daughter for not writing. But I must say, I'm not impressed with 2 word comments either.
I thought I'd post this mystery picture and see if anyone is reading this.
I'm hoping Lorrie will give us reports from Moscow when she goes up there Friday for the week. As for me, I will be in a trial with a visiting California judge. Sad to say for those of you who endured the PTS (pre-trial syndrome), I think I have finally grown up and mellowed out. When I told Jan I was in trial next week, she was surprised. I guess the staff had not revolted of late. Well, I'll try and give you updates on that, but when I'm in trial, I promise nothing.

my favorite valentine

For 27 years now, Kirt has officially been my valentine. (He's actually been my valentine for 37 years, but those first ten years--he didn't know he was my valentine.) They've been great years, and he's still my favorite. Here just a few reasons why--

His laugh
His gorgeous green eyes
His beautiful hands
His patience with me
His hard work
His knack for problem solving

I could go on...best of all, he's my best friend!
Happy Valentine's Day, Kirt, and to all of you--may you be so lucky!
